Lecture Synopsis:

Interdisciplinary Case Management-Dr Desmond Ong

The awareness of dentofacial aesthetics and patient expectations are ever increasing. It is important to provide all reasonable and relevant treatment options, especially for challenging cases. Interdisciplinary management of complex cases can provide excellent outcomes, however, such cases require comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning, along with close communication between all of the clinicians involved.

It is important to acknowledge that all clinical procedures have costs, risks, advantages and disadvantages. This presentation will discuss the clinical challenges of 10 patients and how collaborative interdisciplinary case management was able to fulfil the desired treatment objectives.

Diabetes and Oral Health-Dr Jessica Triay

This presentation will highlight the important role of Dental Hygienists in helping to identify potential diabetes risk factors and signs and to contribute to early diabetes detection and intervention. It will also explore the important impact of diabetes on oral health.

  3. Learn methods to screen for diabetes risk factors and signs during routine dental visits.
  4. Explore emerging trends and research linking diabetes and oral health

Modern treatment options in paediatric dentistry - Dr Alexei Mogilevski 

This lecture will focus on the new successful tends in the management of paediatric dental patients. Conservative treatment options using silver diamine fluoride and Hall crowns have been proven safe, effective tolerated well in children. In many cases these options can delay or remove the need for invasive treatment using drills, local anaesthetic or even general anaesthetic.

 In recent years, preformed zirconia crowns have become the gold standard in aesthetic restorative care for children. This lecture will cover the theory and case reports for the successful use zirconia crowns in children.

  • Understand the theory/background of silver diamine fluoride
  • Be comfortable to select cases appropriate for SDF
  • Learn the background of the Hall technique
  • Case selection for successful Hall crowns
  • Introduction to preformed zirconia paediatric crowns 

Speaker Biographies

Dr Desmond Ong

Orthodontist

Desmond Ong is currently a Clinical Academic in the Discipline of Orthodontics at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry, where he is involved in both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Orthodontic Curriculum.

Many of Desmond’s peer-reviewed publications have focused on the various treatment options for compromised teeth and the benefits of interdisciplinary management for patients with advanced dental needs.

Desmond is also in full-time specialist orthodontic private practice in Townsville and a visiting specialist for Queensland Health in Brisbane (Metro North).

Desmond is a past recipient of the Raj Prasad Award from the Australian Society of Orthodontists and the Emerging Lecturer Award from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.  

 

 

Dr Jessica Triay

Endocrinologist MBBS, BSc (Hons), EMBA, FRACP

Dr Jessica Triay graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in London. Junior medical training took her on a journey across the UK before settling in the Bristol Deanery for Endocrinology specialty training. During that time, she undertook a one-year clinical research sabbatical at the Mayo Clinic focusing on fatty acid metabolism.

Driven by a passion for healthcare management, Jessica pursued an Executive MBA in Health Service Management at the Greenwich Business School. Her dissertation explored user involvement in healthcare development in Belize, informed by research conducted visiting public hospital services around the country during her annual leave.

In Australia, Jessica played a pivotal role in expanding Endocrinology services in Bendigo, Victoria, establishing a comprehensive service encompassing multiple subspeciality areas with a focus on Diabetes care. Joining Gold Coast University Hospital and Health Service in December 2023, she now leads Diabetes Service Development. 

Dr Alexei Mogilevski

Paediatric Dentist

Dr Alex’s passion for working with children came from his experience as a general dentist in Brisbane in 2016. Alex takes great pride in helping families through their dental journey with compassion and kindness.

To pursue his specialist career, Dr Alex spent three years training at the prestigious Queen Mary University of London. After finishing his training and being elected as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr Alex and his partner returned to the beautiful Gold Coast.

Helping treat children with dental challenges in a holistic way is at the core of Alex’s dental philosophy. Education, prevention, and the use of modern techniques inspired Alex to complete research into silver diamine fluoride and other preventative measures, which he has presented at multiple international conferences.

Outside of the dental office you’ll probably find Alex trying his luck in the surf.
